Autumn Birthdays: Cake, Dogs and Halloween Magic

THE AUTUMN BIRTHDAY EDIT
There is a pumpkin by the door. But the cake is definitely for you.
Some birthdays arrive with bunting. Others find a small plastic spider already occupying the mantelpiece. If you celebrate in late October, you may be used to sharing the decorations with Halloween. That need not mean sharing the spotlight.
An autumn birthday card can borrow the season's golden leaves, curious creatures and little pumpkins while keeping the celebration firmly about the person opening it. The trick is choosing how much Halloween belongs in their birthday. A full costume party? A quiet slice of cake? Or simply a walk through the leaves before the kettle goes on?
Here are three small scenes from Calming Colour for three rather different answers.
The Dachshund has come for cake
Look at those ears. Then look at the cake. Our Dachshund with Birthday Cake design brings together a long-eared guest, layers of chocolate-coloured sponge and a scattering of little orange pumpkins. There is enough autumn here to set the table, without anyone having to jump out from behind it.

This is the card for the friend who enjoys a seasonal celebration but still expects a proper birthday. Think of a kitchen gathering, an extra chair pulled up and the dog sitting unusually close to whoever is cutting the slices. The illustration has already invited a guest; your message can invite the recipient to something real.
“Happy birthday. Your only duties today are choosing the biggest slice and letting us make a fuss of you.”
Add a time, a place or the name of their favourite cake. That last little detail turns a pleasant wish into a plan.
The Bulldog has brought the pumpkins
Our English Bulldog with Pumpkins looks rather thoughtful about the company. On either side sits a cheerful carved pumpkin, each wearing the sort of grin that suggests the party has already begun. The Bulldog, meanwhile, seems determined to maintain a little dignity.

This is a lovely choice for someone who brings the decorations down from the loft as soon as the leaves turn. The pumpkins provide the Halloween spirit; that familiar Bulldog expression gives the birthday its guest of honour.
For a friend who enjoys a little mischief, try: “Happy birthday. I've invited two pumpkins to help celebrate. They promised to behave, but I wouldn't leave them alone with the cake.” Add a line about a real autumn outing or a celebration you're planning together.
A little Labrador magic
Meet the Black Labrador puppy in a witch's hat. The hat might be pointed and mysterious, but the face underneath looks far more interested in making a friend than casting a spell.

Choose this one for the Labrador lover who enjoys Halloween at its gentlest: a touch of dressing up, a favourite dog and a birthday wish that feels warm from the first glance. It is just the thing for someone whose idea of a magical evening includes the dog finding the most comfortable seat.
“Wishing you a birthday with good company, plenty of cake and just the right amount of magic.”
Make the message their own with the name of their Labrador or a memory of the two of you out walking. No complicated spell required.
Birthday first, Halloween as they like it
When choosing a Halloween birthday card, take your cue from the person. Someone who puts the decorations up in September may welcome every pumpkin. Someone who prefers a softer touch might choose the puppy in its witch's hat.
Keep their name, their birthday and something you appreciate about them at the centre of your message. The season supplies the scenery; they supply the reason to send the card.
Choose the scene they would step into
A Dachshund waiting beside the cake. A Bulldog keeping company with two smiling pumpkins. A Labrador puppy ready for a little magic. Three ways to celebrate an autumn birthday, with room for very different personalities.
Explore our Halloween & Autumn Cards for more seasonal characters, or browse the birthday card collection if their celebration calls for another kind of scene. Whichever you choose, make sure they know this particular slice of the season belongs to them.
